A student decides he is going to see if mass affects the time it takes for an object to hit the ground. Starting from the same height he drops two similar objects (same size and shape) but one is really light and the other is really heavy. He records the time that it takes for an object to hit the ground. Initially he thought that the heavy object would hit the ground first but he found out that they hit the ground at the same time. Ms. Czap asked him to give a hypothesis, identify his independent and dependent variables, list his constants, and indicate whether or not his hypothesis was supported. He responded
Hypothesis: If I drop a heavier mass it will take less time to hit the ground. (because it falls faster)
Independent Variable: Mass of the Object dropped
Dependent Variable: time it takes to hit the ground
Constant: initial height of the objects, size and shape of the object
Hypothesis is not supported because they hit the ground at the same time. This seems to indicate that the mass doesn't affect the time it takes an object to fall to the ground.
