What is informational text?
The sentence at the beginning of each paragraph that tells what the entire paragraph will be about.
What is a topic sentence?
A syllable added to the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of that word.
What is a prefix?
The central idea of a text; what the text is mostly about.
What is main idea?
Putting events in the order in which they happened.
What is sequencing?
Text that is made-up but could be true in real life.
What is realistic fiction?
A form of figurative language that compares 2 things using the words "like" or "as".
What is a simile?
The meaning of the prefixes -un, -dis, and -non.
What is "not".
Using clues and evidence in the text to determine what the author is suggesting without it being directly stated.
What is inferencing?
Looking at and analyzing the similarities and differences between two topics.
What is comparing and contrasting?
Text that often includes suspense and the plot usually revolves around a crime.
What is a mystery?
Writing that has the purpose of convincing others of something that the author has strong feelings about.
What is persuasive writing?
A word used to connect words, phrases, and clauses (examples- and, but, or)
What is a conjunction?
One event occurs that then results in something else happening.
What is cause and effect?
A form of figurative language that describes an object using human traits. (Example- The tree danced in the wind outside my window.)
What is personification?
Text that includes aliens, parallel universes, space and time travel, and futuristic settings.
What is science fiction?
Writing that tells a story and includes characters, setting, and a plot.
What is narrative writing?
A word or group of words before a noun that shows direction, time, place or location. (examples- with, at, by, too)
What is a preposition?
Using an author's detailed descriptions to create an image or picture in my mind to help me better understand what is happening.
What is visualizing?
Taking key ideas from a text and putting it in your own words to tell what the text is mostly about.
What is summarizing?
A type of informational text that includes the life events and contributions of a notable person.
What is a biography?
A type of writing that asks you to read closely and then use evidence and analysis to answer a question about the text.
What is text dependent analysis?
A word that tells where, when or how something happens (examples- fast, quietly, yesterday)
What is an adverb?
A statement made by an author that expresses the thoughts and feelings they have about a specific topic.
What is an opinion?
A universal idea, lesson or message in a story.
What is theme?
