Name one situation where it is appropriate to use a colon. 

  • Use a colon before a list of items, especially after expressions such as the following and as follows.
  • Do not place a colon right after a verb.
  • Use a colon before a long, formal statement or quotation.
  • Use a colon between independent clauses when the second clause explains or restates the first. You can think of a colon as saying “in other words. . .”
  • Use a colon in certain conventional situations:
    • Between the hour and minute in time.
    • Between the chapter and verse in scripture verses.
    • Between a title and subtitle.
    • After a salutation in a letter.
