Virus vs. Bacteria
100

What should students do with their trash after eating lunch?

Throw it away and keep the area clean.

100

What is a phage?

A virus that infects and kills bacteria.

100

What type of virus is a phage/bacteriophages?

A virus that infects bacteria.

100

Can all bacteria make people sick?

No. Many bacteria are harmless, and some can be helpful.

100

Which is living? Bacteria or viruses?

BACTERIA. Viruses are complicated.

200

Where should a student's phone be during class?

Turned off and inside the student's backpack.

200

Where can scientists find phages?

Anywhere a host cell is found. In places such as soil, rivers, sewage water, and our bodies.

200

What is a virus?

A tiny infectious agent that can reproduce by using a host cell.

200

What can harmful bacteria cause?

They can cause infections and make people sick.

200

How do viruses reproduce?

Host cells

300

What should a student do if they see an unfamiliar person on campus?

Tell a GPA adult or leader right away.

300

What is phage therapy?

Using phages to treat bacterial infections.

300

What happens after a phage takes over a bacterial cell? (step 3 of phage cycle)

The cell begins making new viruses.

300

Where can bacteria be found?

Almost everywhere!
300

How to treat bacterial infections?

Antibiotics OR Phage Therapy

400

What is Tardy Sweep?

A school procedure for students who are late getting to class.

400

Why are phages important when bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?

Phages can kill bacteria that may no longer respond to antibiotics.

400

What genetic material does a phage inject into a bacterial cell?

DNA.

400

List 3 ways bacteria can be helpful

1. Make food (eg: yogurt)

2. Clean pollution (eg: oil spill in ocean)

3. Help grow plants

4. Digest our foods

5. Microbiome in our body

400

What is an example of a bacterium? What is an example of a virus?

Bacterium: E. Coli
Virus: Phages

500

During an emergency, when can a student leave campus?

Only when the student is officially dismissed according to the school's emergency procedure.

500

What is the phage cycle? DRAW IT ON THE BOARD (30 seconds to draw)

  • Attach: The phage attaches to the bacterial cell and injects its DNA.
  • Take Over: The bacterial DNA breaks down, and the cell begins making new viruses.
  • Multiply: New phages are produced inside the bacterial cell.
  • Release: The bacterial cell bursts, releasing the new phages to infect other bacterial cells.
500

How are new phages released from the bacterial cell? (step 4 of the phage cycle)

The bacterial cell bursts, releasing the new phages.

500

How can harmful bacteria make us sick? (hint: food poisoning & E. Coli)

  • Animal intestines carry bacteria.
  • Fecal matter contaminates the environment and food.
  • A person eats the contaminated food.
  • Bacteria enter the body.
  • Bacteria multiply.
  • The person becomes sick.
500

Name 3 parts of a virus AND 3 parts of a bacterium.

Bacterium:

  • Cytoplasm
  • Ribosomes
  • Nucleoid
  • Plasmid
  • Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane)
  • Cell Wall
  • Capsule
  • Flagella
  • Pili (or Fimbriae)

Virus:

  • Genetic Material
  • Capsid
  • Envelope
  • Spike Protein
  • Host Cell
  • Receptor
