The most important, central idea of a whole essay.
What is the Controlling Idea (or Thesis)?
To tell the main points of a text using only your own words and making it much shorter.
What is summarize (or summary)?
The writer's main position or belief about a topic. (Example: "School should start later.")
What is the Claim?
Facts, details, statistics, or examples used to back up the main idea.
What is Supporting Evidence?
To say what someone else wrote using your own words, but keeping it about the same length.
What is paraphrase?
The reasons and evidence a writer uses to support their main point.
What is the Argument?
This tells you the main topic and what the writer will say about it.
