For some people Christmas and the New Year are very merry times; but for cabmen and cabmen’s horses it is no holiday, though it may be a harvest. There are so many parties, balls, and places of amusement open that the work is hard and often late. Sometimes driver and horse have to wait for hours in the rain or frost, shivering with the cold, while the merry people within are dancing away to the music. Larry was first to the top.  He whispered to Donovan, “Look over there.”  He pointed to a man sleeping on the highest, narrow bench of the bleachers.  His pants and shirt were faded, worn, and too large for his thin frame.  One big toe stuck out of a huge hole in his sock.  His scraped-up shoes sat a few feet away.

With this, Mrs. Rachel stepped out of the lane into the backyard of Green Gables. Very green and neat and precise was that yard, set about on one side with great patriarchal willows and the other with prim trees. Not a stray stick nor stone was to be seen, for Mrs. Rachel would have seen it if there had been. One could have eaten a meal off the ground without overbrimming the proverbial peck of dirt.

When you are riding a bicycle in traffic, it is important to communicate your intentions with the motorists around you. In other words, you have to tell people where you are going with signals. When you want to turn left, just extend your left arm out horizontally in the direction that you are turning. If you want to turn right, extend your left elbow horizontally, but point your fingers up at the sky. This will make an "L" shape and will let the people around you know that you are turning right. About three million people have to look for a place to sleep at night.  Some homeless people have jobs but do not earn nearly enough money for both food and shelter.  Some become homeless because they have an unfortunate accident or lose their job. They do not have any back-up resources to make it through the hard times.

The homeless face terrible problems. Many become victims of violence.  Serious health problems may begin because they are exposed to bad weather and unclean conditions.  Homeless children may miss the chance to go to school.  Worst of all, some cities pass laws that make it even harder on the homeless.
