What is the GIST of the passage below?

When President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933, his wife Eleanor became first lady. Before Eleanor Roosevelt, the main job of a first lady was to greet important guests. Eleanor, though, wanted to do more. She traveled across the country talking to people who were out of work. During World War II, Eleanor went to Europe and Asia to help wounded soldiers. She also worked for equal rights for women, African Americans, and people around the world. Since Eleanor, first ladies have worked for the special causes that they believe in.

The gist of this passage is that before Eleanor Roosevelt, the job of the first lade was more minimal. Roosevelt  changed the role from a more social one to actively working on social causes and global issues.

What is the central idea in the text below:

Barbecue is a popular American food. It is usually made by smoking meat over fire and then adding a sauce as the meat finishes cooking. However, barbecue sauces come in many different styles. In North Carolina, for example, people often prepare barbecue sauce with vinegar and spices. In South Carolina, many folks prepare what they call Carolina Gold. The sauce gets its name and golden color from mustard, the sauce's key ingredient. Texas-style barbecue sauce is a thick and spicy sauce that is made with tomatoes. Finally, Kansas City, Missouri, has a famous barbecue sauce as well. It is also made with tomatoes. Unlike Texas-based sauces, however, barbecue sauces from Kansas City are usually sweet. The sweetness comes from using molasses as a main ingredient.

Read the passage and state the gist.

Butterflies start life as tiny eggs laid on top of leaves. The butterfly lays eggs on leaves they like to eat. When the egg hatches, the larva, or caterpillar, emerges. They eat and eat. As they grow, they shed their skin, or exoskeleton. When the caterpillar has grown to its full size, it makes a chrysalis. This is called the pupa stage. When the caterpillar is done forming inside the pupa, a butterfly will come out. At last its wings are folded and wet, but in a few hours they are dry and are ready to fly.

A butterfly follows a predictable life cycle that includes egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and then flying adult.

What is a central idea for the text below?

Before you put on that skeleton costume and rove door-to-door pandering for candy, take a minute to reflect on this tradition. Halloween is believed to have come from an ancient Celtic festival dating back some 2,000 years. November 1st was the Celtic New Year and marked the end of summer to the Celts. They celebrated on its eve by wearing costumes made of animal skins and dancing around bon fires. Over the next two millennia, this primitive celebration grew to be the candy fueled costume ball that we know today

The modern celebration of Halloween, particularly trick-or-treating and costumes, evolved over 2,000 years from an ancient Celtic harvest festival.

State the central idea AND one detail from the text below:

A penny for your thoughts? If it’s a 1943 copper penny, it could be worth as much as fifty thousand dollars. In 1943, most pennies were made out of steel since copper was needed for World War II, so the 1943 copper penny is ultra-rare. Another rarity is the 1955 double die penny. These pennies were mistakenly double stamped, so they have overlapping dates and letters. If it’s uncirculated, it’d easily fetch $25,000 at an auction. Now that’s a pretty penny.

The central idea of this text is that some rare and mistakenly manufactured pennies, like the 1943 copper penny and the 1955 double die penny, are extremely valuable to collectors.

Detail:1943 penny is rare because most pennies that year were made out of steel, as copper was needed for the war effort (World War II).
