A unique type of patchwork that reached the height of its popularity in the Victorian era (late 1800s). Irregularly shaped scraps of silks and velvets are pieced together, then lavishly embroidered. These quilts only seem to be the work of lunatics.
What is a Crazy quilt
The length or width of woven fabric is considered straight grain, there is no stretch when on straight grain.

A quilting term used to describe the method of stitching along existing seams in a quilt top in order to quilt it together with the batting and backing.

The name given to the embroidery technique where pictures are “drawn” with a series of joined stitches. Preferred stitches are usually backstitch or stem stitch, and the picture is embroidered in a single color. (Also can be stitched in black or blue for variation.)

What is a Charm Pack
A quilt made by choosing a central motif and building out from it in concentric framing strips that may be fancy pieced work, applique, or plain cloth. This quilt type was particularly popular from about 1700 to 1830.

Fabric that is already cut into 2 ½ inch strips and wound into a roll. Used for strip piecing and other various patterns, cut from each fabric in a specific fabric line.

A quilt made from left over fabric or from your stash. Utilizes a great variety of fabrics, each block often being pieced from a different combination of materials.

A technique where fabric shapes are cut and sewn onto a fabric block or quilt top. Needle turned, Raw edge, machine are examples.

A term used to refer to an unfinished object or project. Most quilter have many projects on the table at any given time.

What is a Memory quilt
Rulers made from Plexiglas type material. They have a raised edge to guide rotary cutter along edge.
What is a Rotary Ruler
A block that is placed at a 45 degree angle, diagonally, on the quilt top. You must be careful when piecing this style quilt, it is very easy to stretch bias and distort quilt. Proper pinning is a necessity.

Fabric that is cut into 8-9 inch squares consisting of 3- 4 squares of each piece of fabric in a fabric line, great fun for creating fast quilts, or crazy quilts. Can be bought packaged like this in many quilt stores, it is a great idea to pick up additional fabric in yardage for bordering your quilt.
