In the book, the main character, Janie, is an oppressing marriage; “He [Joe] wanted her submission and he’d keep on fighting until he felt he had it” (Hurston 71). Joe, the husband, would not let her talk to the other townspeople and did not let her speak her mind. The illustration depicts the main character, Janie struggling with her suppression. The pearls represent that despite the wealth Joe gave her, but she is still not happy. Her husband made her cover up her hair, which she took particular pride in, with a hair wrap and he even hit her once. He often emotionally abused her, belittling and dehumanizing her. He was wrong and a white man threatened him with a gun, not caring about his money, to start working to bury the dead. This is situation is similar to the events that occurred when these laws were passed after the Civil War in 1865 and 1866 whose intent and effect was the restriction of African Americans freedom if they were caught doing the simplest of things such as being unemployed.

This act of rebellion towards the conservative and stereotypical view of what a women should do at what times is similar to the rebellious acts of this redheaded dare devil who was famous for her record breaking bulldogging skills from the 1920's - 1940's.
