Climax
Life lesson, meaning, moral, or message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. It's what the story is supposed to teach the reader.
Theme
A comparison of two unlike things that use the words "like" or "as"
Simile
Feeling of growing tension and excitement felt by the reader; makes the reader curious about outcomes of the story.
Suspense
This room is an ice box.
She is the bright sun.
Metaphor
Ties up the loose ends. Sometimes offers an unexpected twist before the story ends.
Resolution
Hints and clues that suggest future events in a story.
Foreshadowing
A word that is spelled how it sounds; a word that you can hear
Onomatopoeia
Language that appeals to one or more of your senses
Imagery
Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better.
Alliteration
Introduces the setting and characters; sets up or hints at the conflict. "Expo-" means "to show"
Exposition
When a person, place, object, or activity stands for something beyond itself.
Symbol or Symbolism
An exaggeration that can't possibly be true
Hyperbole
Expresses the writer's attitude toward his or her subject (How the AUTHOR feels)
Tone
The sun waved goodbye.
The words jumped off the page.
Personification
Shows how the conflict unfolds and becomes more complicated. Builds suspense.
Rising Action
Narrator is outside the action and not one of the characters; tells only what one character thinks, feels, and observes.
