Jupiter promises concerned Venus that the Romans will have an eternal future when she comes to him crying about the Trojan War

"Perhaps you wonder how Priam met his end...put on his armor...at the heart of his house...clutching all for nothing the image of the gods."

Anaes explains the death of Priam. Pyrrha chased his son into the palace and killed him in front of them. Pyrrha then takes Priam to the alter his wife and kids are praying to the household God's at and kills him. Significant because it shows you can't escape fate.

"...the face of the moon will not shine 50 times..."

Farinata predicting the exile of Dante from Florence. This prophecy remind's Dante that his journey through Hell is connected to his real-life suffering.

Also teaches us that Farinata doesn't love one another cus she's threatening violence to Dante (heresey).

"For this city must learn, even if it is unwilling..."

Dionysus talking about why he has driven the women to madness. He wants recognition from Thebes that he is a god.

"You have hid in the mountains, and that's why everything is unkempt and unkooth. There are no marriages...only contamination."

Bird talking to Venus about how Cupid has been dallying in the mountains while Venus is swimming in the sea trying to survive.

"Come father, climb up onto my shoulders, little Eulus, walk beside me, wife, follow me."

Aneas speaking to his family while escaping the burning city of Troy. Because his wife, Creusa, follows too far behind, she is snatched up. This causes Aneas to leave Troy and pursue his destiny to found the future Roman people.

"And wondering among them, ____...as one when the month is young...that moment, Aneas wept and spoke to her: Tragic ____, you took the final measure with the sword? I left your shares against my will."

Quote refers to Creusa, who Aeneas goes back for when he realizes she's gone. He calls her name and sees her ghost. He says this line to her and she says it's ok cuz her death is part of the gods plan. Significant because it shows duty is greater than personal happiness.

"I am the one that fitted Frederick's heart...."

Pier Delle Vigne that was an advisor to the emperor Fredrick II. He is explaining that he had complete trust from Frederick. He was falsely accused of treason later and because of this he took his own life and is a now a tree in the suicide woods.

"Do not boast that sovereignty has power among men..."

Tiresias speaking to Pentheus about how political power doesn't make him more powerful than the gods. Significant: shows human power vs. divine pwoer

" You must dress your daughter for a wedding with death...with a snake-like beast...Jupiter stands quaking before him."

Oracle talking to Psyche's dad who asked if Psyche would ever marry. The prophesy scares her family so they abandon their home. Cupid is sent by Venus to make Psyche fall in love with a terrible creature but he falls in love with her instead.

Good, cuz I hate lies and deception.

Venus talking to Aneas and his men as she protects them with a concealing mist as they enter Carthage.

Aneas responds that he don't like deception.

"Lost as he is, she's lost as well..."

Referring to Dido and Aneas. Aneas is lost because he is in exile. Dido is lost in love for him.

Pope Boniface mistake Dante for Pope Nicholas III, who represents the corruption within the Catholic Church.

Significant because it shows us that Dante condemns corruption and abuse of religious power.

"You do not know why you live, or what you are doing, or who you are."

Dionysus talking to Pentheus. Significant because Pentheus thinks he is rational and in control when really Dionysus gradually manipulates him into doing exactly what he wants.

**ANEID**

"Turnus, by these tears of mine, only you can save our sinking house."

"As ____ heard her mother's pleas...a blush flamed up."

Amata, Turnus' ally, begging to Turnus to fight because she believes he is their last hope for the war. Lavinia, her daughter, is the one who always blushes. significant because it shows the personal and emotional cost of war.

"...presses his full weight on the ground and blindly treads on a snake."

Androgeos, a Greek soldier, approaches Aneas and his men as Troy is burning. He thinks they are fellow Greeks. He steps on a snake and realizes he's in danger. Then Aneas and his men surround him and kill him.

"Others, I have no doubt...will forge bronze...but you Roman...rule with all your power and spare the defeated, break the proud in war."

Advice from Aneas' father, Anchises, when Aneas visits the underworld. Significant because it is the mission statement of Rome.

"...I did not weep, I turned to stone inside."

Ugolino telling the story of how Ruggieri imprisoned him and his children. Shows how he lost all feeling before turning to cannibalism.

"I am in my senses and you are not."

Dionysus speaking to Pentheus when Pentheus tries to imprison him. Significant because it is ironic that pentheus is the one that loses his sanity.

"With that, he stamped his left foot on the corpse and stripped away the sword-belt's massive weight..."

AND

"By young Lulu's, by my father's shade, O spare my life..."

Turnus kills Pallas and puts on his belt (w the messed up family life of 50 brothers and sisters).

Aneas kills Magus because of his rage about the dead Pallas. Magus is begging for his life here but Aneas rips off his helmet and kills him.

"...prancing in arms, fed full on poisonous weeds like a snake."

Aeneas tells about the fall of Troy and the violent attack on King Priam's palace. Virgil compares Pyrrhus (the killer) to a snake that has been hiding underground all winter.

"Learn from courage from me, my son...remember father ____ and uncle Hector fire your heart."

Aneas giving advice to his son, Ascanius just before he enters his final battle. Significant because Aneas is passing his values of courage, duty, and family responsibility to his son.

"Oh virgin mother..."

Bernard of Clarvo's hymn in paradiso. He calls to Mary to advocate Dante seeing heaven. Shows us of the faith/miracles of christianity base.

"Dionysus destroyed us--now I understand."

Agave (Pentheus mom) after she realizes she murdered her own son. Significant because illusion becomes reality and it shows us the gods are all powerful.
