The word imam originates from the Arabic root verb amma. This verb means, among other things, to lead the way and to lead by example. The word imam is linked to the term umm, which means source, foundation, or mother, and from which the term umma (‘community’) is derived.
The term imam is used widely in Muslim contexts, meaning ‘leader’ in the general sense. In the Qur’an, the term imam is also used to refer to prophets and their successors as guides of their people.
