List three properties of metals

Good conductors of electricity

Reacts with acids

Lustrous

100

When/Why does metal displacements happen?

The more reactive metal pushes out, or displaces, the less reactive metal from its compound.

100

Complete the equation:

Metals + Oxygen

= Metaloxides

100

Define the rate of reaction

The amount of reactants used up/products formed, over time

100

Explain the effect of pressure on RoR

If the concentration reactant is increased, or the pressure of a reacting gas is increased:

  • the reactant particles become more crowded

  • there is a greater chance of the particles colliding

The rate of reaction increases.

What does Reduction mean?

Gaining electrons

300

Complete this word equation

Metals + Acid → ______ + _______

300

Will silver react with magnesium chloride?

No reaction will occur

300

  1. What is the effect of changing the temperature on the rate of the reaction?

  1. Explain why vegetables last longer in a fridge?

Lower temperature slows down enzyme activity and bacterial growth

300

List 4 ways I know a reaction has taken place

Fizzing, colour change, temperature change, odour change

400

Predict if a reaction will take place and how intense the reaction will be: Zinc + Oxygen

Reacts and produces coating

400
State the collision theory

Chemical reactions can only happen if reactant particles collide with enough energy. The more frequently particles collide, and the greater the proportion of collisions with enough energy, the greater the rate of reaction

400

Define corrosion

Corrosion occurs when most or all the atoms on a metal surface are oxidized

400

If the temperature is increased in a reaction, what happens and why:

  • the reactant particles move more quickly

  • they have more energy

  • the particles collide more often

The rate of reaction increases

Joanne added iron filings to copper sulphate solution. She observed the reaction after one week.

The reaction between iron and copper sulphate is a displacement reaction.

(i) Give the name of the orange metal visible after one week.

Copper

500

Write a word equation for the following and explain why the reaction takes place:

Magensium and Silver Nitrate

Magnesium nitrate + silver

Displacement Reaction (Magnesium is more reactive than silver)

In a chemical reaction, 20 g of sodium hydrogen carbonate is produced. The reaction takes 12 minutes. Calculate the mean rate of the reaction. Give your answer in  g s−1 .

Step 1: Convert the time into seconds.

t (s)=t (min)×60=12×60=720 st (s)=t (min)×60=12×60=720 s

Step 2: Calculate the mean rate. In this example the amount of product formed is measured by the mass.

mean rate=mass of producttime=20/720=0.028 g/s

500

Write the chemical equation:

Iron + Oxygen → Iron Oxide

Fe + O2 → Fe2O3

500

How can combustion be applied to remove a metal from an ore?

Combustion can be used in metal extraction by heating iron ore (e.g., hematite, Fe₂O₃) with carbon in a blast furnace. The carbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon monoxide, which then reduces the ore to molten iron.

500

Write the chemical reaction in a blast furnace

Fe_2O_3 + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO_2
