What are surveying and previewing and why do we do this?
Surveying is quickly scanning the structure of the reading (title and headings) to get an overall idea of the structure and topic. Previewing means skimming or reading very quickly to find the main idea in the introduction and conclusion.

A topic is who or what the reading discusses. A main idea is the author's main point or opinion.

Guide questions are questions that you create before you read to help you get an idea of what questions the reading will answer. You can use headings to create questions that you will find in the reading.

They tell you the relationship between ideas, are a clue to the main idea, help your memory and help you know how to structure notes and study for tests.
