There is a two stage process. There is a lower process which means there is word level word identification, fluency, and vocabulary. There is also a Higher-Order thinking which means they had prior knowledge, selecting, and controlling cognitive strategies to learn from text.

Phonological awareness are broader terms that includes hearing and manipulations of spoken words and syllables and phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate individual phonemes in spoken words and syllables.
