The last bell of the day just rang, where do I go to check in for REC?
The Lunchroom!
(Also accepted: REC, My tutor, my grade table)
What do we do with playground toys when we are done with them?
Bring them back to the black mesh bag.
What is tutoring?
It is something we do at REC to help us keep up on our school work!
What is enrichment?
Enrichment at REC is an opportunity to experience and learn new things that we don't get to do normally at school and at home.
We're going on a field trip to the Cross Orchards Historic Farm today! I just found the cool tractors outside, and my friend says I should climb up on it to pretend like I'm a farmer! What should I do?
BE SAFE - I should keep my feet on the ground. It's not safe to climb on things, especially without a grown up around.
BE RESPECTFUL - I should not climb on something that does not belong to me, or that I have not gotten permission for.
Where should I put my backpack and any projects I may have?
At the backpack table!
What do I do before I get to my snack table?
Wash my hands!
It's tutoring time on Writing Thursday. I HATE WRITING! What should I do?
Listen to my tutor, follow instructions, not touch other people's things, sit in my chair, do my work, etc. Raise my hand and tell my tutor that I feel uncomfortable with writing and ask if they can help me.
How can your tutor tell you are listening?
When you are looking at the tutor and your mouth is closed and your hands are not busy doing something else.
We get to take the REC bus on a field trip today! When can I unbuckle my seatbelt after we get to our location?
When the bus driver opens the door to let us out is the ONLY time we can unbuckle.
I am a third grader - do I go to snack first or to recess first?
Recess!
1st and 2nd grades do Snack first, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders do Recess first!
My friend is asking me to play wall ball with them! They hand me a ball and point to the wall we are supposed to play on. It has windows on it, but there's lots of space above them. Should I still kick the ball against this wall?
NO! I should find a wall without ANY windows.
(The basketball court wall)
Why do you need to follow your tutor's instructions?
So you know what to do, so you can stay safe, so you can play the game right, etc.
Enrichment leaders may come in to lead lessons. What should I do whenever it is time for them to leave?
Say "Thank You!"
I've had two Think Sheets, a write-up, and a meeting with Mrs. MacKenzie and my grown up. I just broke another REC rule. Do I get to go on the field trip today?
No.
Students get Think Sheets to think about their choices and see if they can make different choices in the future.
When a student gets a write up, they also have a meeting with Mrs. MacKenzie and their grown ups.
If a student continues to break REC rules, they will lose privileges such as field trips and can be suspended from REC if necessary.
My group is moving from the lunchroom to the library - what should my feet sound like on the stairs?
(Also acceptable: quiet, silent, gentle)
I am Tetherball ROYALTY! I have won three times in a row! Should I keep playing or should I give someone else a chance to win and get in line again?
If you have won three games in a row, it's time to take a break and give others a chance. This goes for all games on the play ground.
Do you have to do tutoring time if you do not have homework?
Yes! You will have work to do during tutoring time.
Name a kind of enrichment opportunity you are curious about
Soccer, basketball, weaving, keychain making, life skills, chess, origami, ukulele, science, STEM, building, etc.
We got some extra snacks before loading onto the bus today. I'm so hungry after our fun enrichment activity. Should I eat some of my snack really quietly? Nobody will know!
No! You should be safe and respectful and leave the food in your backpack until you get home.
I just heard the whistle blow once while I'm at recess - what should I do?
One Whistle: Time to pick up trash and outside toys.
Two Whistles: Time to line up to go inside
It's snack time right now - but I really have to go to the bathroom. What should I do?
I can raise my hand to ask my tutor if I can go to the restroom. I stay sitting on my pockets until I get permission to leave.
Name a REC rule we have for when we are doing tutoring time.
Be Safe, Be Respectful, Work Hard, Positive/Appropriate Behavior.
Our enrichment this time is so much fun. I want to make so many projects for all of my family members! What should I do?
This is what I should do when enrichment time is over and we have a mess from our activities.
Help clean up!
What should I do when I hear "Waterfall!"?
STOP what I am doing
LOOK at Mrs. MacKenzie
SAY "SHHHH" and
SHOW "waterfall" fingers
Where are all the places I should look to clean up after I have eaten snack?
Under the table, under my plate, my seat.
Name the Tutoring Days of the week!
Reading Tuesday
Math Wednesday
Writing Thursday
SEL/Fun Friday
This enrichment is so boring, I don't want to participate. What do I do?
2. Listen to your choices - you should always have at least two choices to choose from. Your tutor can give them to you.
3. Be respectful - don't interrupt my other classmates from enjoying the enrichment just because I don't want to.
We are on a field trip and my friend just saw the coolest exhibit at the museum! It's just all the way across the museum from where the group is. What should we do?
My friends are all holding up the "Quiet Cougar" sign and have stopped talking to me, even though we were in the middle of a conversation! What should I do?
STOP talking
LOOK for a tutor
SHOW the "quiet cougar" sign
Is it safe for me to sit on top of the monkey bars?
No, it is not safe!
My 4th grade tutoring group is working on fractions today, but my friend in 3rd grade is playing with a cool new manipulative I haven't had a chance to play with yet. I keep trying to get their attention from across the hall but they are having too much fun. My tutor has told me three times already to please be quiet. What should I do?
Be Positive/Appropriate - I am a 4th grader and should be setting a good example for the other younger grades.
Be Respectful - My tutor should not have to remind me so many times to be quiet. I will sit down and show them I am listening.
Be Hard-Working - I know that these fractions make me uncomfortable because they are new to me and I need more practice. (Maybe I can ask my tutor if they have any manipulatives that we can use for our lesson today?)

Take my time - be safe! Please don't over fill your mouth with food, you could choke on it.
My friends are still working on their worksheets but I already finished mine. What should I do?
Be Respectful - I would not like it much if they were loud while I was working, I'll stay quiet so they can focus.

My group is going upstairs for tutoring time and my friend showed me how to walk up the slanted ramp part under the hand-rail. We were having so much fun balancing on it before our tutor saw us and told us to stop. They said we broke REC rules! Which ones did we break?
Be Safe - We must walk up the stairs with marshmallow feet, on the second tile in, with our hand on the rail, and we must never race.
Be Positive/Appropriate - If a kindergartener saw us doing this and tried to do it on their own, they could get hurt. It was not appropriate to model that behavior to other students!
Be Respectful - Walking on a part of the school that is not designed to be walked on is not an appropriate or respectful way to travel through your school. We must take care of it.
(Any answers are acceptable)
There's a big ice patch outside from all the snow and rain this winter. My friends and I just went ice skating so we know how to slide around on it pretty well! Should we go play on it even though there are orange cones around it that mean to be careful?
I have a really important question to ask but my tutor is talking. What do I do?
I raise my hand and wait to be called on before I ask my question. If I need to, I will write it down and save it in my pocket for a better question asking time.

We are running late from tutoring to enrichment time. My group has a big mess still left over in a classroom. Should we stay to clean it up or leave it for someone else to clean up and get to enrichment on time?
We should stay to clean it up. We are borrowing these spaces from people who need to use them during the day. It is up to us to take good care of them and make them look better than they did when we came into them.
I don't like the snack at REC - but I bought a candy bar from the office with my red feathers. Can I have that for snack?
No - Food outside of REC will be saved for you for after REC, not for during REC. Special circumstances may arise where Mrs. MacKenzie might give permission, but that will be planned prior to snack time.
