What is making it accessible?
Theoretically, this procedure should create equivalence across study groups, allowing you to make assumptions about causality of the variable manipulated between the groups.
What is random assignment?
As opposed to mastery goals, which are motivated by your desire to understand something, this type of goal focuses on things like getting good grades, not looking dumb, or receiving praise and recognition.
What are performance goals?
We discussed a contemporary view of this as being construction of new knowledge and understanding based on previous knowledge and belief.
What is learning?
This is where all readings and assignments are posted, and where everything is turned in for the course.
What is Canvas?
Least effective for learning, examples of this level of engagement include listening or watching.
What is passive engagement?
This type of definition involves specifically articulating exactly what something means in a way that makes it concrete and measureable.
What is an operational definition?
This is information that you receive that tells you whether you know or understand something based on your performance, and is extremely important for promoting learning.
What is feedback?
One type of meaningful difference across learners that results from the different levels of experience and abilities related to their learning.
What are differences in prior knowledge and mental representations?
This is how many points each student should try to reach through posting on the discussion boards this semester.
What is 33?
This is the characteristic of research that implies that it addresses an existing need or question in education.
What is applicable?
This type of research question addresses the consideration of how research provides implications or “best practices” information for use in a real-world setting.
What are application (or so what?) questions?
This is required for learning information and skills, and involves repetition to develop knowledge.
What is practice?
This theory of learning involves the idea that children build on prior knowledge and experiences to understand new information or to modify their existing understanding to be more complete and accurate.
What is constructivism?
Essential for everyone’s learning – this includes your class contributions, which help your peers develop understanding of the material, and vice versa. It is worth 50 of the 330 points in your grade.
What is participation?
The level of engagement that promotes learning by focusing attention, typically involving some type of physical movement (hands, mouth, etc.)
What is active learning?
When considering a measure used in research, this aspect of that measure means that it is actually measuring what you think you are measuring.
(Hint: this is what a scale would be if it gave you someone’s actual/correct weight, rather than something else, like their height or the weight they felt that day)
What is validity?
This refers to the ability to monitor your understanding and learning, to evaluate whether the strategies you choose are effective or not, and to use adaptive learning strategies such as scheduling your studying effectively.
What is self-regulation?
This type of thinking can greatly enhance learning, and involves processes like taking a step back to consider whether or not you understand something, what strategies are and are not effective for you, and effective planning.
What is metacognition?
This is the best way to reach me if you have questions or would like to schedule a time to meet.

This is when you determine how the material fits with current understanding, revising your knowledge if needed
What is constructive engagement?
When considering a measure used in research, this aspect of that measure means that it is consistent in giving precise and accurate information. (Hint: this is what a scale would be if it gives you the same value every time you weigh something that has not changed weight)
What is reliability?
This is the past knowledge and skills you have acquired that shape how you think and make sense of the world.
What is prior knowledge?
Jirout used this term to describe something that is unclear and thus hard to assess, suggesting a lack of clarity or understanding about exactly what something means.
What is ill-defined?
