What are you looking for during the arm check and What actions are taken if abnormalities are observed?

What actions are taken for a donor unable to use the stadiometer due to physical restriction?

Answer: Enter 1 foot 1 inch as height value, finalize creation of the Donor Profile, escalate the donor to Medical Staff 

Note: The Height Questionnaire should be left pending until an accurate height has been retrieved via the HCP letter assigned by the MSA

What actions are required for Red cells on prism?

Clean prism per DOC-000929198 - Cleaning the Refractometer. 

Collect and read a new sample. 

Correct the total protein value and record “Red cells on prism” in the correction comment.

How do we process brand new Illiterate new donors ?

Have them watch the video first , create their profile then have them listen to the CD prior to asking their questions.

What is the acceptable weight range and what actions are taken if outside of acceptable range?

Bonus Question: What do you document if the donor weights more than the max acceptable weight?

If additional height verification is required, and the current “Values Entered Do Not Match” that of a historically recorded value, what actions are taken?  

  • Have a second trained employee confirm that the height reading on the stadiometer is accurate.
  • If verification of height value does not identify a change from what is recorded in DMS, follow the normal process according to Additional Height Verification Performance Guide per DOC-000994178.
  •  A comment will be required to be entered prior to updating the profile. Record “Donor’s previous height is (Xft Xin.) Height change confirmed by (initials of 2nd employee).
  • Record the updated height in donor profile 
  • Select “Yes” in Assess Height Questionnaire to indicate height changed 
  • Resolve questionnaire flags for adding Height Change Investigation note and adding stadiometer equipment ID
  • Select “Fail” for the review and take action 

 Send donor to medical staff

What do you do if an error message is received during the reading of Total Protein?

Record total protein value as 0.

Refractometer - User Guide - Error Messages to resolve the message. Clean prism per DOC-000929198 - Cleaning the Refractometer. 

If batteries replaced, perform set point CAL and daily control activities per DOC-000926639 - Equipment Activity Grid 

Collect and read a new sample. 

Correct the total protein value and record the unacceptable reason in the correction comment. 

If second sample receives additional error message, remove refractometer from service. Complete screening activities in another booth, or with another calibrated refractometer that has been assigned to the booth.

What is the risk of incorrectly assessing an illiterate donor as literate?

The donor may not be able to read or fully understand required documents and health history questions thus putting their safety at risk.

What screening values require the donor to be escalated to MSA, and why?

Systolic BP above 200 or diastolic BP above 120

Pulse is 40-49 BPM ( If no athletic donor note is active)

If Pulse is 135 BPM or greater, DMS will automatically escalate to MSA.

To ensure the donor is not experiencing an event that would require outside medical assistance

What actions are taken if the top of the donor’s head is not accessible?

  • Instruct the donor to stand to one side of the stadiometer pole 
  • Feet and back aligned, stand straight, face forward 
  • Instruct the donor to place the headpiece at their hairline 
  • Verify that the headpiece is at the donor’s hairline and read the measurement
  • Document the height measurement in DMS, rounding down to the nearest inch

Add a General Donor Note stating that the donor’s height was measured at the hairline
