What does personal control mean? And how can it help with substance use?
an individual's belief about the degree that he or she can bring about good events and avoid bad events. The act of making decisions for yourself.
Your personal control skills have a major impact on your ability to make helpful decision rather than hurtful decisions. As we have briefly talked about in the past, substance use control is a lot about deciding between a hurtful decision and a helpful one. Short term “gain” versus long term gain

What does STEPS stand for?
Stop, Think, Evaluate, Preform/Act, Self-praise
Luke was feeling really frustrated with his Econ. teacher about an assignment. Luke feels like the teacher is being unfair because she will not extend the due date even though Luke needs more time. Luke gets the urge to scream and cuss at the teacher. He thinks about whether that would solve his problem or make it worse. Work through this as luke and come up with a helpful solution.
Luke should take a step back and take a deep breath. Cussing and yelling at the teacher will not help his assignment get done or his grade. He will ultimately end up in more trouble. As he is thinking Luke knows he should have started the assignment earlier. After taking a minute for himself, he decides to turn in the assignment unfinished to get partial credit.

What is a support network and why are they important? Specifically, when looking at substance use and personal control.
A support are positive people in your life that you can lean on for extra support. They can do a lot for you and your journey. They help keep you accountable, talk to you when you need it, and help you make helpful decisions.
What are we evaluating when we get to evaluate on STEPS? Why do we do that?
We evaluate out options so we can pick the best and most helpful options.
While the teacher is teaching their lesson. Rich asked Gage to go to the bathroom and vape with him. Gage is so bored in the lesson that he is okay with anything that gets him out of class. Rich goes in the bathroom first and then Gage asked to go a couple minutes later. They are vaping in the bathroom with the fire alarm goes off. They exit the building and two SROs stop them and ask both Rich and Gage to go to the office with them because they could smell something outside of the bathroom. Helpful or Hurtful? What is the cause and effect? Was it worth it?
Hurtful. Because they decided to vape in the bathroom at school, the fire alarm was triggered. The Vapes had a smell so the SROs could smell in from outside the bathrooms. It was not worth it because now the boys are going to get in trouble for making a hurtful choice.
What is academic success?
Setting and meeting your academic goals or personal goals that impact your academics. That could look differently depending on the circumstance. That could look like getting a C or it could look like showing up to class 2 days in a row. Everyone is different and that is okay.
Susie woke up late for school and was getting yelled at by her parents. When she got to school there are three students she usually walks to class with picking on her for being "grumpy." Susie feels her heart racing and he face getting hot. She wants to cuss them out and maybe punch a locker to feel better.

Lucy and Becky were planning on skipping class to go to a new coffee shop and hang out. Becky is skipping V-Lab so she thinks it will be okay because no one teaches. Lucy is skipping Chemistry which is already has a D- in. Lucy knows it is the end of the year and that the final test is coming up, but she skips anyways. Who is in the wrong? What could the consequences be?
Both girls are in the wrong for not respecting the rule of the school.
Lucy might fail her class now because she missed something important.
Becky won't get a class finished before APEX resets.
