Frederick Douglass was a slave who escaped and became one of the most famous abolitionists before, during, and after the Civil War. He wrote books, gave speeches, and tried to convince Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery.

Sharecroppers were required to pay back their debts with the crops they harvested. By the time they had paid all of their debts off for the year there was very little harvest left over for them to try and make money with. This forced them to continue sharecropping so they didn't become homeless/arrested/etc.

After the South lost the Civil War, why did southern states want to rejoin the USA so bad? 

The South had been utterly destroyed by the war. Without the help of the US government, the South would have suffered for a very long time trying to rebuild on their own. They didn't have any money, food, or other resources (railroad tracks, telegraph lines, farm equipment, buildings, etc.).
