What is reconstruction?
Created to provide food, shelter, education, and other necessities to freed slaves.
What is the Freedman's Bureau
Land owner provides land, tools, seed. He gets a large portion of the crop and these citizens sold the rest.
Who are sharecroppers?
Farmers who rented their land.
Who are tenant farmers?
The area in the US where Reconstruction occurred.
What is the South?
Gave African Americans full citizenship and forbade states from passing discriminatory laws
What is the Civil Rights Act of 1866?
The group of people who faced discrimination and hate in the south following the Civil War.
Who are African Americans?
Idea that African Americans could pay off debts by working for white landowners until the debt was paid off.
What is debt peonage?
This plan pardoned all confederates, and stated when 10% of voters take an allegiance to the U.S. the state could form a government
What is the 10% plan?
Prevented states from denying rights to any U.S. citizen.
What is the 14th Amendment?
Northerners who moved to the South after the war.
Who are Carpetbaggers?
Codes written for African Americans before and after the Civil War that were extremely challenging and harsh towards African Americans.
What are slave codes and black codes?
The Congressional answer to the 10% Plan.
What is the Wade-Davis Bill.
Said states must ratify the 14th amendment in order to be allowed back into the Union and divided states into 5 military districts.
What is the Reconstruction Act of 1867?
White southerners who joined the Republican party.
Who are Scalawags?
Vigilante group whose goal was to destroy the Republican party, end reconstruction, limit voting rights of African Americans.
What is the Ku Klux Klan?
Required southerners who owned $20,000 or more in property to ask for a presidential pardon.
What is Johnson's Plan.
No one can be kept from voting because of race or color.
What is 15 Amendment?
The three groups that made up the Republican Party in the South.
Who are Carpetbaggers, Scalawags, and African Americans?
Passed in 1872 and returned the right to vote to southerners.
