What is the Freedmen's Bureau? Why was it successful during Reconstruction?
The Freedmen's Bureau was created by Lincoln to help slaves get an education and find jobs. It also built schools, hospitals, and railroads. It was successful because it helped to rebuilt the nation and heal the nation by educating and finding jobs for former African American slaves.

What does impeachment mean? Why was did Congress impeach President Johnson?
Impeachment – The bringing of charges of wrongdoing against an elected official by the House of Representatives President Johnson was impeached by Congress because Congress was angry that Johnson attempted to veto or reject their Reconstruction Acts.

Who were carpetbaggers? Did Southerners like or dislike carpetbaggers?
Carpetbaggers were people from the North who moved to the South to create businesses and make money. Southerners disliked carpetbaggers.

Name at least one thing that the Reconstruction Acts did. There were 4 things we talked about.
1. Divided the former Confederate states into military districts 2. The President sent federal troops to the South to keep order and enforce emancipation of slaves 3. Required Southern states to write new state constitutions giving African American men the right to vote 4. Prevented former Confederate leaders from voting or holding elected office

Define Segregation and Black Codes.
Segregation – The separation of people, usually by race - Schools, hospitals, theaters, railroad cars, even whole towns were segregated Black Codes – Laws Southern states passed which denied African American men the right to vote - It also kept them from owning guns or taking certain types of jobs

What is sharecropping?
Sharecropping – A system in which someone who owns land lets someone else “rent” the land to farm it

Could many African Americans afford that poll tax? How did this affect their ability to vote?
Many African Americans could not afford the poll tax. Many African Americans didn't vote because they couldn't afford to pay the poll tax.

Why did President Johnson and Congress fight fiercely?
President Johnson wanted to pardon or forgive Southerners and allow Confederate states to rejoin the Union if they outlawed slavery. Congress wanted to punish the Confederate states for leaving the Union.

Why do you think Segregation and Black Codes were a failure during Reconstruction?
Reconstruction was about healing, rebuilding, and bringing the country together just as it was before the Civil War started. Segregation and Black Codes caused more division and did not heal or help rebuild the nation.

After Reconstruction, why did the South remain one of the poorest sections of the country?
- Rebuilding was slow - Poverty was widespread - African Americans lost much of the political power they had gained during Reconstruction - Northern whites began to lose interest in the problems of the South

What are 3 ways Southerners used to keep African Americans from voting?
1. They charged a poll tax Poll tax - A payment to vote (many African Americans could not afford the poll tax) 2. They had to take a reading test (Many failed the test since they didn't know how to read or write) 3. "Grandfather Clause" - Men could only vote if their father or grandfather voted before 1867 - African Americans could not vote under this clause since they were first allowed to vote in 1870
