Slavery was abolished unless you were convicted of a crime

Klu Klux Klan - A white supremacist organization that used violence to terrorize and restrict the rights of Black people in the South

People were forced to work in order to pay off their debts
What was the effects of the War on Drugs?
Declared in the 1970s - the war on drugs led to mass incarceration of people of color
What was the 15th amendment?
Gave all men the right to vote regardless of race
What was the Freedmen's Bureau?
A government agency that was established to help newly freed Black people with clothing, food, shelter, and education
What was sharecropping?
Black farmers rented land and paid rent using the crops they grew. Most sharecroppers were stuck in debt to their landowners
What is the Prison Industrial Complex?
The network of public and private industries who make money off of people being in jail.
What was the 14th Amendment?
Gave citizenship to anyone born in the USA + equal protection under the law

President after Lincoln. Johnson was more in favor of letting former Confederates return to power.

Laws in the South used to limit the freedom of Black people
Why was the movie called "13th"?
To draw attention to the loophole in the 13th amendment that has allowed for people in jail to be forced to work for free / little pay
