Two expeditions set off in 1910 with the goal of reaching the South Pole; the British lead by Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian lead by Roald Amundsen.  Scott had lead a previous expedition in 1901 that made great strides in Antartica's exploration, setting a Farthest South record of the time, having to turn back due to weather hardships.  Amundsen wanted to be the first to reach the North Pole, but upon hearing news that Americans had reached it he secretly changed plans and set out to be the first to reach the South Pole.  Which team made it to the South Pole first, Scott's or Amundsen's?

Amundsen's party reached the south pole on the 14th of December, 1911, just 33 days before Scott's team did.  While Amundsen's team, skilled with ski's and snow dogs, made it safely back, Scott's team perished on their return journey due to weather conditions and poor survival skills.
