The Virtue of Responsibility
The Virtue of Kindness
The Virtue of Gratitude
The Virtue of Forgiveness

Mr. Osborn's favorite ice cream flavor is: (a) Salt and Pepper, (b) Doggy Breath, (c) Mint Chocolate Chip, (d) Rotten Eggs.

(c) MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP!  Yum!  Although, Salt and Pepper doesn't sound too bad!

According to one of the videos we watched, RESPONSIBILITY is “doing what we should do WHEN ___”!

a. We feel like it
b. We get paid
c. We should do it
d. We've had our coffee for the day

According to one of the videos we watched, RESPONSIBILITY is “doing what we should do WHEN... (a) we should DO it”!  We do the right things, because they are the right thing to do, and we want to please God.

100

All of the following are examples of Kindness EXCEPT:

a. opening the door for someone else
b. offering to help someone clean up a mess they made
c. running to the front of the line to get to recess
d. listening to a friend who is upset

What is... (c) running to the front of the line to get to recess?  While recess is fun, and we want to get there quickly, we might as well allow our friends to go first, since we're probably going to play with them anyway!

TRUE OR FALSE: According to St. Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, as Christians, we are called to be thankful only when life is easy and good.

What is... FALSE!  The scripture actually states, "Give thanks in ALL things; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  But why?  Find out in another question!

100

TRUE OR FALSE: Anger is a bad thing.

What is... FALSE!  Anger is a feeling God gave us, which can actually be used for good.  For example, if you see someone being bullied at recess and are angered by it, then you are more likely to help that person.  What CAN be bad is if we hold on to our anger and let it turn into hate!

Mr. Osborn loves to do all the following except: (a) play guitar, (b) spend time with his family, (c) help students at school, (d) swim with alligators!

(d) SWIM WITH ALLIGATORS... don't get me wrong.  They're nice animals 'n all... just not good swim partners.

200

In another video we watched, a little girl, Izzy, was responsible for taking care of a class plant (she had to water it and give it sunlight).  Instead, she played and danced around mostly.  Was this being responsible?

NO!  It was Izzy's job to see that the plant got plenty of water and sunlight.  As a result, the plant wilted and almost died.

A big part of having Kindness is to have Empathy.  What is Empathy?

a. caring about the feelings of others and trying to feel what they feel
b. not caring how someone thinks or feels
c. thinking that everyone else is selfish
d. the desire to be number one in all things

What is... (a) caring about the feelings of others and trying to feel what they feel?  Though we can't know EXACTLY what someone is feeling, we can imagine what they MIGHT be feeling and try to respect that.

200

In one of the videos, we watched a boy standing in the rain.  All of the following are reasons he could be thankful, even in the rain, EXCEPT:

a. He had a friend with him.
b. He could play in the puddles.
c. He had a rain coat to keep him dry.
d. The rain was cold and came down heavily.

What is... (d) The rain was cold and came down heavily.  Obviously, cold, heavy rain would not be fun or enjoyable.  But, even then, if he had a friend with him or he liked to play outside in the puddles, he could still be thankful!

All of the following are true about Forgiveness EXCEPT:

a. You can forgive and still be a little angry at the person.
b. Forgiveness doesn't mean we just let people treat us poorly.
c. Forgiveness is always easy.
d. Forgiving someone is not showing weakness; it takes real strength to forgive someone.

What is... (c) Forgiveness is always easy?  While it might be easy to forgive some things (for example, when a friend accidentally bumps into you), there are times where it can be extremely difficult.  That is when we call on the Holy Spirit to help us forgive that person.

A counselor can help me with all of the following EXCEPT: (a) how to knit a blanket, (b) ways to relax, (c) how to control my anger, (d) problems with my friends and homework.

(a) HOW TO KNIT A BLANKET!  Sorry, I don't know how to do that!

300

In the same video, Izzy tried to replace the wilted plant with another one, so the other kids wouldn't know she didn't do her job.  What should she have done when they asked to see the plant?

a. Tell the truth and ask for help to bring it back to life
b. Tell them her dog breathed on the plant, causing it to wilt
c. Tell them she gave it too much water and sunlight
d. Tell them she never really liked the plant, so she let it wilt

What is... (a) Tell the truth and ask for help to bring it back to life?  Being honest is always the best way to go.  Thankfully, Izzy realized her mistake and told them the truth.  This allowed them to help her bring the plant back to life.

300

Imagine your friend lost her cat, Toby.  All of these are ways to show Empathy EXCEPT:

a. Listen to her as she tells you her feelings.
b. Tell her it's no big deal; it's just a cat.
c. Offer to help look for her cat.
d. Help her put up "Missing Cat" signs around the neighborhood.

What is... (b) Tell her it's no big deal; it's just a cat.  Wow!  How unkind and insensitive is that!

300

All of the following are good ways to have an "Attitude of Gratitude" all of the time, EXCEPT:

a. Brag to your friends when you get a good grade or score a run in a sport.
b. Closing your eyes and thinking of something nice someone did for you.
c. Stop and SEE, LISTEN, and TOUCH. (For example, SEE your friends or family around you, LISTEN at the sound of birds singing, or TOUCH the hand of a love one.)
d. Take a "Gratitude Breath" - Take a deep breath while thinking of something or someone you are thankful for.

What is... (a) Brag to your friends when you get a good grade or score a run in a sport.  Bragging shows that you are trying to be better than others.  It does NOT show a heart of gratitude, because it focuses all your attention on yourself and ignores the importance of others.  God loves ALL of us, and we are ALL special in His eyes - and that's something to be thankful for!

300

When the Prodigal Son - who spent all his inheritance money - returned home, how did his Father receive him?

a. He yelled at His son and sent him to his room.
b. He ran to him, kissed him, then threw him a party.
c. He told His son to leave and never come back.
d. He made His son pay back all the money he spent.

What is... (b) He ran to him, kissed him, then threw a party?  This is how God responds to us when we sin, but then come to him and say we're sorry (and mean it).

400

If I want to go talk to Mr. Osborn, I can do all of the following EXCEPT: (a) ask my teacher, (b) run out of P.E. without telling anyone, (c) fill out one of those slips of paper in the box outside his office, (d) ask my parent.

(b) RUN OUT OF P.E. WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE!  (It's a safety thing.)

400

Which of the following is NOT being responsible:

a. Feeding the dog before school every day.
b. Lying to your Mom about doing your homework.
c. Spilling your drink, then cleaning it up right away.
d. Returning a book you borrowed from a friend after you read it.

What is... (b) Lying to your Mom about doing your homework.  What should you do instead of lying?

400

In one of the videos we watched, a young man was afraid to swim.  Even though his friend was not afraid of water, he WAS afraid of ___, and so he had Empathy for his friend.

a. sharks
b. teddy bears
c. bees
d. flying

What is... (c) bees?  You don't have to share the same fears as someone to have Empathy for them.  Just think of something that scares you, and... you'll have Empathy for them!

400

According to Psalm 139, we are to praise God, because He made us:

a. better than others
b. fearfully
c. wonderfully
d. after He made the animals
e. both (b) and (c)

What is... (e) both (b) and (c)?  As we recite every class, "I praise YOU because I am fearfully and wonderfully made!"  God loves each of us so much that He made us all different and special.  You are the only YOU that has ever lived and will live!

400

In one of the videos we watched about forgiveness, a young cub named Mateo was upset because his friend, Cal, accidentally sprayed his soccer shoes with water.  At first, Mateo was upset and stormed off.  Later, though, when Cal apologized, how did Mateo respond?

a. He told her to get lost.
b. He took his shoes back without saying anything.
c. He said that he forgave her.
d. He said he didn't want to be her friend anymore.

What is... (c) He said that he forgave her.  Just like God always forgives us our sins, He wants us to do the same for others!

500

When I talk to Mr. Osborn in private, he HAS to tell someone if: (a) I am in danger or someone else is in danger, (b) I broke a school rule and it needs to be told to the Principal or Vice Principal, (c) I ask him to share it with someone else, (d) all of the above.

(d) ALL OF THE ABOVE! I want to make sure you are safe, so, if you plan on hurting yourself or someone else, or someone else is hurting you, I have to tell someone... it's the law :)

500

What is the responsible thing to do in the following scenario: You are sitting at recess, and you notice a group of your friends picking on the new kid in school.  One of them invites you over to join in making fun of them.

a. Laugh along with your friends.
b. Walk away and play with someone else.
c. Stand up for the new student.
d. Tell the teacher what your friends are doing.
e. Answers (c) or (d).

What is... (e) Answers (c) or (d)?  Either choice is good.  You can either stand up for the new kid OR tell the teacher... or both!

500

True or False: If someone is sad, telling them to cheer up and move on is a good example of Empathy.

What is... both True or False?  It depends on the situation.  If someone is "stuck" in sadness, then it may be all right to try cheering them up.  However, in most cases, it's better to ask how they are feeling and just listen, as they need to "get their feelings out".  Just your presence is often enough to help someone feel better.

500

All of the following are examples of showing a thankful heart EXCEPT:

a. Great job at winning, brother!
b. I can't wait to visit my family at Christmas!
c. My sister is better than me at everything!
d. What a beautiful sunset, Lord!

What is... (c) My sister is better than me at everything!  God doesn't want us comparing ourselves to anyone else.  Why?  Because He has gifts and plans just for us, that no one else can have.  Focusing on others and their gifts keeps us from seeing all the good things inside of us!  (And it keeps us from being grateful.)

In another video we watched, a man stole some money from a king.  When the king found out, the man begged the king for mercy and forgiveness.  How did the king respond to that?

a. The king forgave him and said he didn't owe him anything.
b. The king locked the man up forever.
c. The king had the man sent to another kingdom far away.
d. The king told the man he had 30 days to pay him back.

What is... (a) The king forgave him and said he didn't owe him anything.  The king, of course, represents God.  God will always forgive us, if we come to him and say we are sorry (and mean it, of course!).  That's how great His love for us is!
