What is one thing about his education or family life that we know about Michelangelo?

Michelangelo did not follow a regular school path. At about age 13, he became an apprentice to a painter named Domenico Ghirlandaio. There he learned drawing, paint mixing, and the basics of workshop life. After this apprenticeship, he studied classical sculpture by spending time in the sculpture gardens of the powerful Medici family in Florence. The Medici household gave him access to ancient Roman statues and educated men who taught him about poetry, literature, and humanist ideas.

Michelangelo’s family was not wealthy, though they were from an old but declining noble line. His parents arranged for his training when he was young, but Michelangelo never married and had no children. He stayed close to some family members and helpers throughout his life, but most of his relationships were with patrons, other artists, and several close friends. He wrote many letters and poems that reveal his personal feelings and relationships.
