Rules of Reported Speech
What do we usually do to the verb tense in reported speech?
We change it to the past tense.
"She said, 'I am tired.'"
She said that she was tired.
She said that she is tired.
She said that she was tired.
What do we add after "said" in reported speech?
The word "that" (optional but common).
"They said, 'We are playing a game.'"
They said that they were playing a game.
He said that he have a book.
He said that he had a book.
What’s the difference between “say” and “tell”?
You say something to someone; You tell someone something
Example: Maria said that she was happy.
Maria told me that she was happy.
"Miguel said, 'I have homework.'"
Miguel said that he had homework.
They said that they are playing outside.
They said that they were playing outside.
Which is correct: “He told that he was sick” or “He said that he was sick”?
He said that he was sick.
"Luisa said, 'I play too many video games.'"
Luisa said that she plays too many video games.
I said that I want to help.
I said that I wanted to help.
Which is correct: “He told me he was tired” or “He said me he was tired”?
He told me he was tired.
"The teacher said, 'You must finish your test.'"
The teacher said that we had to finish our test.
