He apologized for being late.

'I swear it wasn't me who stole your money yesterday. It was Tom!' said Ann to me. (DENY / ACCUSE)
Ann denied STEALING MY money THAT DAY and ACCUSED Tom of doing it.
'If I had killed him, I would have gone to prison. But I think I should have done that'. (.... / REGRET)
He said that if he HAD KILLED him, he would have gone to prison. But he REGRETS NOT DOING that.
