A polar bear has a mutation that causes it to have thicker fur.
A good/beneficial mutation.
Which is an adaptation for a kangaroo?
A) Kangaroos are large marsupials that are found only in Australia
B) There is a rich fossil record for kangaroo ancestors and ancient relatives; giant kangaroos plodded through the Pleistocene
C) Kangaroos have very large tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs" helping them run from predators.

Are the daughter cells exactly the same as or different from the parent cells in asexual reproduction?
Exactly the same (identical copies)
Is the following an example of natural selection or artificial selection?
A 7th grade student living in Logan Utah decides to grow a garden. The first year they plant seeds they purchased from the store. Some of these seeds were tomatoes that could be replanted from their own seeds year after year. After the first year, the student carefully picked the tomatoes that were the biggest, and replanted those seeds.
The second year, the students tomatoes are bigger than they were the first year. Again, the student picks the biggest tomato and replants those seeds. The third year, the tomatoes are even bigger.
After many years of doing this, the student is growing tomatoes that are much bigger than the tomatoes from the store.
Artificial Selection
True or False: Mutations are permanent changes in the DNA sequence or structure.
True
Kingfishers are birds that live near rivers or ponds and eat fish. Kingfishers have long narrow sharp beaks. How does this adaptation help these birds to survive?
A) The beak balances the bird
B) The beak helps the bird catch fish
C) The beak makes the bird bigger so it can't fit into its nest.

A polar bear has very small ears to keep it from losing too much heat.

How many parents are needed for sexual reproduction to occur?
2 parents (1 male, 1 female) are needed
Natural Selection or Artificial Selection:
Farmers selectively breeding chickens over the years to provide more meat.

Beneficial Harmful or Neutral?
Cystic Fibrosis is a mutation that occurred in humans that causes a thick sticky mucus to build up on the linings of the lungs and the digestive organs. This mutation limits the individual's ability to breathe, to digest food, and to fight off infection. Most individuals that inherit this mutation die at a young age. However, individuals with this mutation are immune to a disease called typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is a serious disease spread by contaminated food and water. Symptoms of typhoid include lasting high fevers, weakness, stomach pains, headache, and loss of appetite. In the past, having a single copy of the Cystic Fibrosis gene could be helpful in preventing this disease. However, due to better hygiene practice and cleaning practices Typhoid fever is almost nonexistent today, therefore, you should consider this mutation to be:
An example of a harmful mutation.
Are the following behavioral adaptations or structural adaptations?
Ducks have webbed feet to help them swim
Porcupines have quills to ward off predators

Which type of asexual reproduction do most bacteria use?

Natural Selection or Artificial Selection
Peppered moths are moths found in Europe. They come in two different varieties, a dark variety and a light variety. The trees in Europe had bark that was really light colored before the late 1800's. The dark colored moths were being eaten by birds more and not surviving as well as the light colored moths. The tree bark became very dark colored after the late 1800's due to the polluted environment from factory smoke. The light colored moths were now being eaten more and not surviving as well.
Natural Selection
All of these are examples of... beneficial, harmful, or neutral mutations.
A zebra has a mutation that causes it to be all black.
An apple tree has a mutation that causes it to produce bitter apples that break apart the seed.
A frog has a mutation that causes it to lose the webs between its toes.
Harmful Mutations
Are the following adaptations behavioral or structural?
Birds migrate in winter to get food all year.
Opossums "play dead "to confuse predators
Behavioral Adaptations
Spiders spin sticky webs to trap insects to eat.

Behavioral adaptation
Which type of reproduction creates organisms with a lot of variations? Why
Sexual Reproduction because the offspring get characteristics from both parents, rather than just one parent.
Natural Selection or Artificial Selection?
a process that results in some animals and plants with certain characteristics being better adjusted than others to their natural environment. Those plants and animals then have a higher chance to survive, reproduce, and increase their population more than the ones that are less adapted to their environment. The better adapted plants and animals are therefore able to pass on their advantageous characteristics (coded for by genes) to their offspring through inheritance.
Natural Selection
Which of the following would be an example of a mutation that is helpful to an organism?

B) A snake that lives in the desert has a mutation which causes it's skin to be a color closer in color to the sand.
C) A plant that lives in the desert has a mutation which causes it to lose the waxy covering on its leaves.

B) Poison dart frogs eat insects including fruit flies, ants, termites, young crickets, and tiny beetles.
