True or False?

I only have to respect co-workers who I consider friends or that I personally like in the workplace.

False.

Everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace, regardless of your personal opinion of them.

Which is the better choice:

My supervisor told me that I was doing a great job today and it made me feel really proud. What should I say back to them?

A. Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate that!

B. It's about time you noticed all the work I do here!

A.

When someone gives you positive feedback, especially at work, you should thank them for taking the time to praise you and let them know that you appreciate hearing it. If you want to be super respectful, you could even give a compliment back (i.e. "I learned from the best", etc.).

Respectful or Disrespectful:

Kyle filled his water bottle with grape juice before going onto the work floor today. He then accidentally spilled it onto a pallet of cardboard.

Disrespectful.

Kyle disrespected the rule of "only plain water" on the work floor. He disrespected the work environment by violating the rules and subsequently destroying customer product.

Respectful or Disrespectful:

I am not in a good mood today and I don't want to be talked to. So, when I was working the cash register and a customer asked me about my day I told them I don't want to talk.

Disrespectful.

When it comes to customer service and customer relations, it is never okay to display a poor attitude. Even when we aren't feeling happy, we need to make sure that we treat customers with kindness and respect. If we feel that we are too upset to work respectfully with customers, we need to talk with our supervisor about the issue and might even need to go home for the day.

Respectful or Disrespectful:

I got into an argument with a co-worker today over who could use the microwave first. I yelled at them and called them names and now I feel embarrassed.

Disrespectful.

Allowing your emotions to take over your choices is not okay. When we act before we think, we tend to make poor choices for ourselves. Making poor choices for yourself, especially at work, is being disrespectful to yourself.

What are some ways that we can demonstrate respect for our co-workers? Name at least 2.

Examples:

Holding doors for them, letting them go first, taking turns, keeping negative opinions to ourselves, keeping rude comments to ourselves, apologizing, greeting them, helping them, etc.

200

Respectful or Disrespectful:

My supervisor told me to sweep and mop the floors. I didn't see anything on the floors and they looked clean to me, so I just got the mop bucket and mop wet to make it look like I used it instead of cleaning the floors.

Disrespectful.

Not only is this dishonest, which is not acceptable in the workplace. But, it is disrespectful to disobey your supervisor's directions. The better choice would be to follow through with what you were told to do, even if you think it doesn't need to be done.

True or False:

Respecting our work environment means treating facility and the equipment responsibly.

Which is the better choice:

I found a $20 on the break room floor today at work. I know it's not mine, but I could really use the money. What should I do?

A. Turn the money into my supervisor so they can give it to the owner.

B. Keep the money. No one will know you have it.

A.

Self-Respect is about making good choices for yourself, even when no one is watching. When you face a dilemma like this one in the work place, think about this: Which one of these choices will make me feel proud of myself? The answer is simple then-doing the right thing is the respectful choice.

A. Avoid her and not talk to her the rest of the day
