What are guard cells?

Each stoma has two bean-shaped cells called guard cells. The opening and closing of stomata are regulated by changes in the turgidity(SWELLING) of the guard cells.

Define the following-

-ATP(100 P)

-Chlorophyll(100 P)

-Chloroplast (100 P)

1)the source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level.

2)Chlorophyll is a pigment present in all green plants and a few other organisms. It is required for photosynthesis, which is the process by which light energy is converted into chemical energy.

3)Chloroplasts are plant cell organelles that convert light energy into relatively stable chemical energy via the photosynthetic process.

How does the exchange of gases take place through the stomata?(IN DETAIL)

Each stoma has two bean-shaped cells called guard cells. The inner walls of the guard cells are thicker than the outer walls. When the guard cells are full of water, they swell and bulge outwards, opening the stomata. When the stomata is open, the exchange of gases takes place by the process of diffusion. Oxygen and water vapor leave the plant through the stomata while carbon dioxide enters through them.
When the guard cells lose water, they lose their turgidity closing the stomata. When the stomata is closed, no exchange of gases takes place through it.

State an experiment to demonstrate that photosynthesis has taken place?

When you put iodine on the leaves, one of them will turn blue-black and the other will be a reddish-brown. Iodine is an indicator that turns blue-black in the presence of starch. The leaf that was in the light turns blue-black, which demonstrates that the leaf has been performing photosynthesis and producing starch.

Fill in the blanks---

............... is a process that takes place in plants throughout the day. It is of ............... types. They are ............... respiration and ...............respiration. In ............... respiration, complete ............... of glucose takes place in the presence of ............... to release ..............., ............... and ............... ATP molecules. In ............... respiration, incomplete ............... takes place in the ............... of oxygen to release ..............., ............... and ...............ATP molecules.

Respiration is a process that takes place in plants throughout the day. It is of two types. They are aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, complete oxidation of glucose takes place in the presence of oxygen to release carbon dioxide, water and 38 ATP molecules. In anaerobic respiration, incomplete oxidation takes place in the absence of oxygen to release Ethynol, carbon dioxide and two ATP molecules.

Explain photosynthesis(steps, definition, etc). Represent photosynthesis using a Chemical equation(write it on the board).

The process by which green plants use energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose in the presence of green-colored pigment (chlorophyll) is called photosynthesis. Plants obtain carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through stomata and water is absorbed by the roots from the soil. The process of photosynthesis involves the following steps:

  1. Water is taken up by the root system and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere reaches the leaves.
  2. Light is absorbed by chlorophyll, which splits water (called photolysis) and releases oxygen. This reaction depends on sunlight for activation energy. It takes place in the thylakoids of the chloroplasts.
  3. Carbon dioxide splits and this carbon is used to make sugars. This reaction does not require light energy. It occurs in the stroma.
  4. Sugars are formed and they combine to form complex sugars. Glucose and fructose are formed as a result of photosynthesis.

The following word equation can represent photosynthesis:

            Sunlight

Co2+H2O----------> Glucose(C6H12O6) + O2

           Chlorophyll
