He had a harrowing experience at sea when sailing from Atlantic City to Nova Scotia with a friend after graduation from College. He and his friend were sailing with charts that were 12 years old and didn't note a nuclear submarine base. The boat they were sailing (25' Ericson) had a centerboard you could raise. The two came to a line of floats connected with a steel cable that they thought were crab traps (but it was a gate to keep one out of the naval base), so they raised the centerboard and sailed on. Two Coast Guard cutter ships (the big hydrofoils with large deck guns) came flying at them and yelled at them to bear away. They were sailing dead downwind (wind directly behind them) and the sails were wing on wing (main sail on one side and jib sail on the other) which is a tippy unstable point of sail. He and his friend were being thrown from one side to the other with the wake from the cutters, and had trouble getting sails under control to comply with commands. Finally they were able to get on a tack away from the cutters when a Los Angeles class nuclear submarine surfaced right next to them and the wake nearly caused them to capsize. It filled the sky. Absolutely huge. Luckily they survived and were escorted out of the naval base waters and the Coast Guard gave them a slap on the wrist and told them to get current charts. This was 1991.
