The lesson to be learned is never make the deal with the devil. This is because, Tom Walker made the deal with the devil, where he would charge insane amount of interest rates on people which resulted in them becoming extremely poor as well as how Tom destroyed other lives due to his greed ad selfishness. That being said, due to his actions, he was taken away by the devil and hasn't been heard from sense.

So when the minister wore the veil, they became disgusted by his action of a secret sin.
