Name one function of emotions? Why do we need them?
1. Emotions motivate (and organize) us for action
2. Emotions communicate to (and influence) others
3. Emotions communicate to ourselves
My best friend just completely walked past me at school. They must be mad at me.
That's unusual that my best friend would just walk past me like that. I am not sure why.
It's possible they didn't see me.
I will check-in and find out if everything is okay.
Give an example of "jumping to conclusions"
Great work!
Why is "avoidance" unhelpful?
What's your favorite kind of pet?
Yay!
Our natural alarm system. Our basic response to danger, and signals the need for immediate action and/or attention.
Fear
Everyone thinks I am stupid.
It feels like people are judging me, but I made a mistake, like every human being does.
I might be being really hard on myself. Even if even one person is thinking that, then that's pretty unkind of them.
This moment isn't going to matter to me in a year.
What is "all or nothing" thinking?
"Either I do it right or not at all"
Give an example of "avoidance"
Anything where someone is able to avoid an anxious situation
True or false: Learning to observe, describe, and name your emotions can help you regulate your emotions.

Name the three parts of an emotion.

Behaviors
Physical sensations/feelings

Give an example of a 'thinking the worst' statement.
The worst thing that could happen!
What's one thing you are excited about doing this school year?
Cool!
What does anxiety feel like in your body?
Nausea, sweaty hands, stomachache, mind-racing, shallow breaths, tears, etc.
I had a panic attack the last time I took the train, I am definitely going to have one again and it'll be even worse.
The last time I took the train was really uncomfortable. But that does not guarantee that I will have one again.
I've survived every panic attack I've ever had. If it happens I can handle it and it will pass.
This time I will be prepared to prevent the likelihood of a panic attack. I'll engage in deep breathing, listen to music, etc.
Give an example of 'mind reading' or 'fortune telling.' Explain how this is a thinking trap
Good job!
By calling a friend when they are sad, by taking deep breaths when they are angry, etc.
Name 3 coping strategies
Deep breathing, coloring, going on a bike ride, playing a game, listening to music, running hands under cold water, etc.
What is the purpose of anxiety? Why do we have/need this emotion?
Its purpose is to allow us to be ready to cope with potentially negative or dangerous events. It is future-oriented. It signals the need to reduce activity and refocus attention on possible sources of future threat or danger (assumedly for self-preservation purposes). When we feel anxious, our bodies and minds go into a state of vigilance and “preparation” so that we aren’t caught off guard if something bad happens.
My significant other is going to break up with me because we had a fight. (Team members: generate a few reappraisals)
Good job team!
Give an example of 'negative thinking.' How is this a thinking trap?
You got it!
When would someone "act opposite" of their emotion?
When they want to change their emotion.
Would you rather be sticky for the rest of your life or itchy for the rest of your life?
