This man led a rebellion of indentured servants and enslaved African and mixed race people against the colonial government of Jamestown. They actually burned down Jamestown.

European claims to this colony were first made by Swedes in the south and the Dutch further north, there was also a large Quaker presence. It was also split into East and West, and forced to unite in 1702. Where we live was on the east side, but very close to the border.

This colony bordered Spanish controlled Florida to its south, and settlers were not welcomed (generally) by native communities already there. It was a dangerous place to go, this is why debtors in prison were recruited out of England to live there to work of their prison time. They could gain land, if they survived.

Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts for what he preached, so he started a colony south of there where people could be religiously free and the Natives were treated somewhat better.

Form of slavery where enslavers have total, absolute power over the life, labor, and liberty of enslaved people. Enslaved individuals can be bought, sold, traded, gifted, or inherited just like livestock or furniture. The status of a slave is permanent and legally inherited, meaning children born to enslaved mothers are automatically enslaved for life. Enslaved people possess no personal freedom, civil rights, or legal standing

Just to the south of Virginia, its coastline was the setting for the failed Roanoke colony, inland tobacco production would make this colony very profitable for planters through enslaved labor of Africans. There were also lots of forests for shipbuilding there too.

The people who participated in Bacon's Rebellion were angry that the government leaders of Jamestown would not allow them to settle in this direction to gain better farmland (since the elite planters had claimed the best land for themselves).

When the British recognized the tremendous wealth in trade that control over the harbors of New Amsterdam and Hudson River, they took it away from the Dutch and renamed it to reflect their English dominance.
