Explain the different between an independent clause and a dependent clause and what that means for punctuation.
Both an independent and dependent clause contain a subject and a verb; however, a dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence. A dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction (AAAWWUBIS) that makes it incomplete. If the dependent clause comes BEFORE the independent clause, you need a comma. If the independent clause comes before a dependent clause, you do not need a comma.
