Which verbs stem-change in the preterite?   How is the change different?  Explain. Give an example of one verb that stem-changes in the preterite... conjugate it completely.

Not all of the verbs that were stem-changers in present tense will stem-change in preterite.  Verbs that end in -AR and -ER will not stem-change in preterite, but verbs that end in -IR will.   However, they change differently.  In present tense, they change in a "boot" form, but in preterite, they only change in the "él" and "ellos" forms.  Also, instead of E to IE, it will only change E to I, and instead of O to UE, it will only change O to U.

examples will vary but here are two:

DORMIR:   dormí, dormiste, durmió, dormimos, durmieron

PREFERIR:  preferí, preferiste, prefirió, preferimos, prefirieron
