They use physical and chemical barriers to defend themselves from predators. 

Physical barriers would be their thorns.

Chemical barriers would be like the toxins they produce against bacteria and insects. 

Also  they warn other plants they are being attacked so the other plants get prepared.

What is the difference between a complete and incomplete metamorphosis?

Incomplete metamorphosis has three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. 

In complete metamorphosis similar changes occur species go changing from egg to larva or maggot, then pupa or cocoons, and finally adults.
