Name the longest river in the world.

The Amazon River

100

Which course of a river is closest to the source?

Upper course

100

Describe the two types of erosion made by rivers.

Vertical erosion is downward and V shaped. Lateral erosion is sideways.

Name all 5 oceans of the world.

Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, Southern

200

Name the river famous for the fish that are harvested for caviar.

The Volga River

200

In which part of a rivers' course will you find a meander?

Middle course
200

What is created in the upper course by vertical erosion?

interlocking spurs

200

What is the difference between an ocean and a sea?

An ocean is just a larger area of sea.

300

Where is the Nile River located?

(Country, Continent)

Egypt, Africa

300

On which side of a river's bend does the water move faster?

Outside bend

300

Explain how an oxbow lake is formed

In a meander the two sides of a river get bigger and bigger while the neck of the meander becomes narrower and narrower. Eventually the two sides of the river meet. Sediment gets deposited and eventually cuts off the lake.

300

Give the definition of a river.

A river is a flow of fresh water over land into a sea, ocean, or lake.

400

Approximately how long is the Amazon River?

Approximately 4000 miles long

400

On which side of a rivers' bend is the water most shallow?

The inside of the bend.

400

Name all four types of transportation.

Traction, saltation, suspension, solution.

400

Explain the purpose of the Aswan High Dam.

The dam creates a reservoir that is an important store of water for times of drought.

OR

The dam allows electricity to be generated.

OR

It stops the annual flooding.

500

In which country does the Amazon river have its source?

Peru

500

When does a river have the most energy?

When it is flowing very quickly AND when it is very deep.

Explain the course of a river from the source to the mouth

A river starts at the source then moves into the upper course. In the upper course, vertical erosion creates interlocking spurs. Then, in the middle course meanders are formed. As the river gets wider, the neck of the meander gets narrower and creates an oxbow lake. Finally, the river moves into the lower course and opens at the mouth into a lake sea or ocean.

Explain how flooding is a positive phenomenon.

When a river floods it deposits sediment on the surrounding land making the soil rich and fertile. This allows for successful agriculture/ crop growing.
