Parts of Speech
This part of speech names a person, place, or thing.
What is a noun?
The mark put at the end of a sentence that asks a question.
What is a question mark?
The people or animals in a story.
Who are the characters?
Two words that mean almost the same thing, like small and little.
What are synonyms?
When you come across an important word or a word you do not know while reading, you should place this mark around it.
What is a circle?
Names like "McDonald's," "Florida," or "Mrs. Smith" are this special kind of noun that always starts with a capital letter.
What is a proper noun?
The mark used at the end of a sentence when you are yelling or super excited.
What is an exclamation point?
Where and when a story takes place, like "a sunny beach in the summer."
What is the setting?
Two words that mean the opposite, like hot and cold.
What are antonyms?
I should do this to my paragraphs before I start reading.
What is numbering the paragraphs?
In the sentence "The cat slept on the bed," this is the action verb.
What is "slept"?
A small mark used to separate items in a list, like apples, bananas, and oranges.
What is a comma?
The main problem that happens in the story.
What is the conflict?
A word part added to the front of a word, like un- in unhappy.
What is a prefix?
After I circle important words and phrases, I write these in the margins or under the paragraph.
What are bullet notes?
Identify the adjective in this sentence: "The fluffy dog barked."
What is "fluffy"?
Marks put around words when a character is speaking out loud in a book.
What are quotation marks?
How the main problem in a story gets solved at the end.
What is the solution (or resolution)?
A word part added to the end of a word, like -less in fearless.
What is a suffix?
These are words that are under a picture, chart, or illustration.
What are captions?
Identify the adverb in this sentence: "He ran fast."
What is "fast"?
The mark used in short words like don't or can't to replace missing letters.
What is an apostrophe?
The lesson or moral the author wants you to learn from the story.
What is the theme?
Words that sound the exact same but are spelled differently, like sun and son.
What are homophones?
This is the process of numbering paragraphs, circling important words, and writing bullet notes.
