Choices. Life is full of choices, one choice always leads to another choice. We are a result of our decisions.

This is the start of the story he is telling in the future. 

He emphasizes "I" to prove it was his decision and no one elses. He took the road of noncomformity which was a difficult decision that changed his life (for better or for worse we are unsure)
