100

a diagram that shows what the inside of something looks like by "slicing" through it

cross section

100

Explain how sedimentary rock could have once been igneous rock

Pieces of igneous rock could have broken due to weathering, forming sediment, which can then get compressed and cemented into sedimentary rock.

100

the rock formed when magma cools and becomes solid rock

igneous rock

100

the process of rock material moving under Earth's outer layer and into the mantle

subduction

100

The clue for remembering where igneous rock is formed

I for igneous

I for inside the earth

200

movement of sediment from one place to another, often caused by wind or flowing water

erosion

200

HOW and WHERE metamorphic rock is formed

How - a result of pressure and heat on existing rock

Where - inside the earth

200

rock that forms when sediment is pressed and glued together

sedimentary rock

200

the process of sediment getting "glued" together

cementation

200

This clue is how we remember what subduction means

SUBduction (goes down into the mantle)

SUBmarine (goes down in the water)

300

hot liquid rock below the surface of earth

magma

300

You see a mountain range in your travels.  Your sister wonders, because of how rocks change, how different it will look next week when you drive past it again.  What do you say?

It won't look different in a week.  It takes a LONG time for these changes to happen.

300

small loose pieces of rock

sediment

300

the process of rock breaking down into smaller pieces due to wind or moving water

weathering

300

the clue for remembering where sedimentary rock forms (where it gets energy from)

S for sedimentary

S for sun (weathering)

400

a region of rock that formed together as a single rock type

rock formation

400

Where in the world can we find igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary rocks?

They can be ANYWHERE!  It doesn't matter which continent we are on.
400

This rock forms from liquid rock

igneous

400

the process of sediment getting buried and pressed together

compaction

Rocks can go from one kind to another.  This can be modeled using circles, but is NOT always in the same order.  This is called the...

rock cycle

500

Explain the journey to go from magma to sedimentary rock

Magma in the earth will come up (as lava).  It cools and forms igneous rock.  When igneous rock is exposed to weathering, it can become sediment.  Sediment gets compressed/wet/cemented/glued into sedimentary rock.

500

rock that forms when heat and pressure deep underground change existing rock

metamorphic rock

500

the process by which all rocks in a region get pushed up due to plate motion

uplift
