100
Name the 3 types of rocks.
What is igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
100
What is a rock? Name 2 of the 3 things that make a rock a rock.
What is a solid, made from nature, and made up of minerals.
100
What are minerals? Name at least 3 characteristics.
Minerals occur in nature, they are a solid, they have a fixed chemical formula, and they have a crystal pattern that repeats.
100
What are the two types of fossils?
A mold, and a cast. A mold is what's left after the plant or animal decays; the empty space left in the rock. A cast is when the mold fills with minerals which harden.
100
If the study of rocks is called petrology, what are scientists called that study rocks?
What is petrologists.
200
What does Petrology mean?
Petrology is the study of rocks.
200
How are metamorphic rocks made?
Metamorphic rocks are made by heat and pressure. They change form, or go through a metamorphosis.
200
How are minerals grouped? By the way they are formed or by how they look?
They are grouped by the way they are formed.
200
What is an imprint fossil?
An imprint is from leaves or thin objects that lay on mud which then hardens into rock, forming the fossil.
200
What did you like better as you were learning about rocks...rotating through centers or sitting the whole period reading and listening? Why?
What is any good answer, but the "why" must be answered.
300
Where do igneous rocks come from?
They come from volcanos or hot magma.
300
Pumice is a type of what kind of rock?
What is igneous. It is light and has many holes made from air bubbles.
300
Name two minerals that can be used for jewelry.
What is silver, gold, copper, platinum, diamond
300
What does petrification mean?
Petrification means the process of a fossil turning to stone. Minerals replace plant or animal bones or other hard parts.
300
Name one rock you looked at, touched, studied and describe it.
What is any appropriate answer.
400
Describe sedimentary rocks.
What is layered, sediment of smooth or sharp particles. Some sedimentary rocks are formed from shells.
400
Wind and rain affect what kind of rocks?
What is sedimentary rocks because the weather wears off the small particles of the rock, such as small shells.
400
Name something you use every day that has minerals in it.
What is toothpaste, salt, baking powder and graphite, or lead in pencils
400
What can scientists learn from fossils?
Scientists can learn about the Earth's history, and about the plants and animals that lived long ago.
400
Name something other than a rock or mineral that you liked learning about.
What is a fossil or sea glass, or other appropriate answer.
500
Describe the rock cycle.
Igneous rocks form underground from molten magma. If they stay underground they would turn to metamorphic because of heat and pressure. If the igneous rock came out of the volcano, it would wear away over time, forming sediments, turning into sedimentary rock. This process takes 1,000's of years.
500
Is volcanic a type of rock?
No, the types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
500
How can minerals be identified? Name at least 3
What is color, shape, luster, hardness, form, physical properties.
500
What ways have extinct animals been preserved?
Extinct animals have been found preserved by freezing in Arctic areas, insects have been found in amber, and animals have been found in tar pits.
500
What do people eat that is found naturally in foods? Rocks or minerals?
What is minerals.
