100
Where are most of the volcanoes located?
What is the the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
100
What are the two types of volcanoes?
Cone volcano and shield volcano
100
Do mountains last forever? Why or why not?
No, mountains start as solid rock but the rock breaks into smaller pieces and the pieces roll down the mountain.
100
What are landslides?
Landslides are made of rocks or soil that slide down a slope.
200
What pattern does this follow?
A horseshoe called the Ring of Fire.
200
Why are some volcanoes cone-shaped and some shield shaped?
They have different kinds of lava.
200
How does solid rock break into smaller pieces?
Plants and ice break rock into smaller pieces.
200
What causes landslides?
Landslides can happen when there is loose rock on a slope of more than 35º and there has been a lot of rain.
300
Why might you find lava rock so far away from the ring of Fire?
It could be there from an inactive volcano that doesn't erupt anymore.
300
Describe each type of lava and its importance to the shape of the volcano.
Cone-shaped volcanoes have thick lava that oozes out slowly, forming a hill. Shield-shaped volcanoes have lava that is thin and runny, so the lava spreads out farther.
300
What is root wedging?
Seeds and water can enter cracks in the rock. As the roots grow, the crack gets wider and the rock breaks.
300
Imagine that you are camping in a hilly area. How can you figure out if it’s a safe place to camp?
Look to see if there is a lot of loose rock, if the slope is greater than 35º and if there has been or will be a lot of rain.
400
What might an inactive volcano look like?
It would be covered with grass. Trees may have also grown there.
400
How could you figure out if the volcano makes felsite or basalt lava?
You could look at the shape of the volcano and the color of the rocks. If the volcano is shaped like a shield and the rocks are dark, the volcano probably produces basalt lava. If the volcano is shaped like a cone and the rocks are lighter, the volcano probably produces felsite lava.
400
What is ice wedging?
Water can enter cracks in the rock. As the water freezes, the crack gets wider and the rock breaks.
500
Could a volcano erupt in your backyard?
No, because we do not live near the The Ring of Fire.
500
Which volcanoes are more likely to explode, the ones with thick lava or thin lava? Why?
Volcanoes with thick lava trap the gas bubbles. Eventually the gas makes the volcano explode.
500
How are rocks at the top of a mountain different than the ones at the bottom?
Rocks at the bottom of the mountain are smoother because as they tumble the sharp corners break off.
