Year this museum was founded and why

What is:

1886, when 30 Prominent citizens (AKA rich people) signed a petition to have a museum in the Capitol Buildings on Victoria Island. It passed and the Provincial Government (Provinces are like states in the U.S so they have their own governments too) created what they called at the time, The Birdcages.

John Fannin was the first Curator and he donated his own large collection of birds and all of his knowledge on them all. That is the reason why the very first buildings for this museum were called The Birdcages.

One career I could see myself doing and why would it be a great match

What is:

I am looking for a career that involves other human beans and this museum has a lot of different opportunities to work as a team, and/or educating the public. I've always contemplated being a teacher because I would love to educate new generations, but I don't know if I'd want to commit to just one age group, and I would want to see new faces and reach a larger audience. I always looked up to the Toy Maker who came to schools and the Reptile Man and I even interviewed the Reptile Man. Those are people who get to put on a little show almost (which would incorporate my theatre hobby) and they travel around just to spark a little something in people's heads. They are the one's who motivate you to pursue certain things on your own and I would want to be like that. Thats why I think being a Museum Tour Guide would be so much fun!

In 1913, the provincial government placed the Museum Act into motion which gave the museum authority and rights to these 3 things:

What are:

1. To secure and preserve specimens illustrating natural history of the province.

2. To collect Anthropological material relating to the indigenous peoples of the province.

3. To both obtain information and diffuse knowledge respecting the natural sciences pertaining the history of the province.

Is this museum Local, National, International, or neither?

What is: Local?

While it is a Local Museum, it works with the Provincial Government and in some cases, (like finding new species, new big historic events/artifacts, or big projects), the Canadian Government can work with them. And the Queen has been known to authorize certain events and exhibitions.

My two favorite classes and why they connect to the museum

What are:

1. English Language Arts - I really like to read, write, and talk, as you can probably imagine, my biggest value is Communication and I feel like E.L.A is both my strong suit and my weakness because there are so many different subjects and so much to learn and while I'm pretty good at some, I need to improve on others, but it really is my favorite subject because you get so much choice and you can improve in so many ways!

2. Social Studies - If someone says History, it can mean so many different things. "Social Studies" has SO many different meanings and different subjects within it. And I obviously can't learn everything. I wont know the history of every country, but I'd love to dig deep into one subject. At this museum it can either mean the Indigenous people of Canada (which I'd love to explore since I am a large part Native American myself) or it means one of the 8 natural sciences (which I'd obviously want to pursue Herpetology, as you all probably know) While my strong suit may not be memorizing every battle of a war, I really enjoy analyzing history and teaching others about the past and I'd love to find new and exciting ways to do that!

In 1941 six vacant lots in Victoria were transformed into the ___________ Park

What is: The Thunderbird Park?

In this park, totem poles from all different tribes in the province's history were displayed for a little more than a decade. However, deterioration of the poles became a huge concern so the poles had to be moved inside to be properly reserved, now they have life-like replicas outside, but they still have the originals inside the Anthropology exhibit.

Out of the 9 Heads of Departments at this Museum, this much of them are women:

What is:

6 out of the 9 heads are women. In fact, the Head of Indigenous Collections and Repatriation is indigenous herself, founding member of the Haida Heritage. She also got her Masters and Diploma at University of Victoria, as many of the other Department Heads did. (That means that I could legitimately go to my dream college and work at my dream job and it wouldn't be too far-fetched!!)

The CEO and Vice president

Who is:

Professor Jeck Lohman (CEO) and Joanne Orr (Vice)

*The balance between men and women is awesome! I would say about 60% of the employees are women, while the rest are men. Gosh, I love Canada!

The careers Naviance recommended to me and how it connects to the Museum

What are:

Arts/communications/technology, Tourism, Marketing, Education, Information Tech, Government and Public Administration, etc.

At this museum, I could develop new engaging ways to display the exhibits which would most definitely include Technology, maybe Acting. I can tour and work more with people and hospitality. I could research/ create new ways to research, and if I get to research, or if I get to intern one of the researchers I could use some of my Language Arts skills (In the MI Advantage, Naviance said that my highest strength is Linguistic. It was almost to the end of the graph!) to write articles about their research. I could also study history more and look for artifacts or interpret the artifacts we may get. I have the opportunity to lead people as a manager. If all else fails, I can be a janitor 🤣

I'm very confident in this job/career because I don't believe it will close me off from other things I want to pursue.

How the Royal British Columbia Museum supports the Province of BC

There are 10 ministries in the government of British Columbia and the museum works in many different ways to support each of the ten. See my PowerPoint for more details!

500

How this museum is run

What is:

The Royal BC Museum Corporation is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors, appointed by the Province, and accountable to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The Board appoints a Chief Executive Officer to implement policies and corporate goals.

Who I know and my dream plan for how to get where I want to be

 What is:

I know the Herpetologist, Dr. Gavin Hanke and my goal is to go to the University of Victoria, visit the museum often, volunteer there and hopefully get an internship with Dr. Hanke somehow. After that, it honestly is hard to tell where I'll go. I may take up his job, study his works, find new species, research old ones, analyze the behavior and history of certain species, etc. Or maybe I will lean towards the Tour guide option, where I would work under him and present all of his research and teach all that he's learned to new generations. (I particularly love that option!) Either way, I know the first steps to what I want to do and my goals in the future will probably change a lot, but that's alright.
