What is the difference between a topic and a main idea?
Topic tells us who or what the text is about.
Main idea is more specific and detailed. It tells us what the author wants you to know or learn about that topic.
A word that serves as a key. It is a significant or descriptive word. It is used as a reference point for finding other words or information.
Key Words
What information do charts and graphs show?
Represent and show data related to, or elaborate on, something on the text.
Information placed next to a text. It is separate from the text, but the content is related.
Sidebars
A list of topics in alphabetical order at the back of a book. It includes page numbers you can find those topics at.

Index
Where is the main idea almost always stated in a passage?
At the beginning and at the end.
Letters that slant to the right. This makes the word stand out.
Italics
True or False: Sidebars are separate from the text.
True! They are placed next to a text and are separate but the content in them is still related.
This allows readers to see inside something. Usually, it is a picture of something with some outer parts not included so that you can see the inside.
