How do we form the imperfect tense in French and what is it used for?
Go to the nous form of the present tense of the verb. Take off the -ons. Add the imperfect endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
This tense is used to set the scene in the past. It describes the circumstances of past events (how people were feeling, what the weather was like, what people were in the middle of doing before something interrupted them).
