Scenarios
Who Does It - Where do You Put It?
What do you do?
What would Happen?
100
A student must heat up a chemical solution in a glass beaker. They will use a Bunsen burner to complete this lab. Students should put ON this piece of safety equipment prior to starting the lab.
What are safety goggles? (remember goggles are required when working with items which are hot, sharp, or toxic/hazardous) (They should also put on lab aprons if they are available)
100
As part of a lab students are using baking soda, corn starch, and water. When the lab is done there is some left over powder in the beaker. This is the place that students should dispose of the leftover powder.
What is the designated receptacle? (solids don't get placed down the sink, left over NEVER go back into the original containers, and materials should not be thrown in the trash unless your teacher advises you that it is okay to do so)
100
A fire starts in the lab. After telling the teacher, this is what students should do.
What is calmly follow teacher's instructions?
100
Students are fooling around in the lab, not paying attention, pushing each other around. They will face these immediate consequences without any warning or reminders.
What is expulsion from the lab and a zero for the activity with no make ups? (safety is a serious business, you and your parents are required to review and sign the safety contract. Violations of that contract are grounds for immediate zeros and restriction from current and potentially future lab exercises)
200
A student is heating a test tube over an open flame and the open end is pointing toward their partner, who is wearing flip flops and no safety goggles. These items are incorrect and should be fixed immediately!
What is the test tube should be pointed away from any/all people, the lab partner should be wearing closed toe shoes and safety goggles?
200
You are working on a chemistry lab and accidentally spill the small beakers of vinegar and water. This is the first thing you will do.
What is tell the teacher? (who in this case will provide instructions for how the students are to clean it up, but each situation is different so the first thing is to let the teacher know)
200
A student has very long hair, this is what they should do before starting the lab.
What is securely tie back their hair?
200
A student wears contacts but does not indicate this on their safety contract or tell the teacher prior to the lab. During the lab they drop a beaker and somehow get chemicals in their eye (despite the fact they are wearing safety goggles). Notification of contact wearing is required to assist with this.
What is proper eye care for chemical exposures? (it is best not to wear contacts for labs. However, if you must wear your lenses make certain you tell your teacher. They can adjust how you participate in the lab to improve safety. But they must be alert because some chemicals will dissolve the plastic lenses and other chemicals can become trapped behind lenses causing severe eye damage)
300
A student gets cut on a piece of glass in the laboratory. This is the first thing they should do.
What is tell the teacher? (the teacher will give the student further instructions based on the severity of the wound)
300
You are about to put together a series style electrical circuit as part of a lab. When to your lab area there is a big puddle. This is the first thing you do.
What is tell the teacher? (who will instruct you on how to clean and dry the area. Always check that equipment is in good working order and never work with electrical equipment in an area that is wet.)
300
Biology students are working with preserved lab specimens. This is what they do after the lab is cleaned up before they do anything else, including leave the classroom.
What is wash their hands with soap and water?
300
Your partner picks up the meter stick being used for the lab and starts to show you their latest baton twirling routine. This is what you should do immediately.
What is tell the teacher and move out of the way? (By the way - the student's behavior is unsafe and considered horseplay. They face being removed from the lab and receiving a zero for their unsafe and grossly inappropriate behavior)
400
A student catches their sleeve on fire. This is the safety device which will be used to put out the fire.
What is a fire blanket?
400
The bell rings and students are just finishing up a lab. This is what the students must do prior to leaving the classroom/lab area.
What is clean up and properly store their equipment? (The students conducting the lab are responsible for clean up! NOT THE TEACHER(S)!!!)
400
You haven't had a chance to finish your lunch and you want to take it into the science lab. Eating in the lab is appropriate and permitted at this time.
What is NEVER?
400
Students are working with a material that is flammable. One student wants to also use the lab space but their experiment requires the use of a Bunsen Burner. This is the reason the second student would not be permitted to use the lab space at that time.
What is the chemicals being used are flammable (meaning they should be kept away from sources of open flames or heat)? (the second lab will have to wait until the room is cleared of the flammable chemicals)
500
Behind the demo desk in room 150 is a red button. This is often called the "red panic button". Pressing this button will shut off all of the ______________ to the science lab.
What is natural gas (or more commonly gas)?
500
A student discovers their equipment isn't working properly. This is what they should do immediately.
What is tell the teacher?
500
A volatile chemical is left on the lab table in an open container overnight. In the morning Ms. Czap comes into the room, the odor in the room makes her lightheaded but she can't quickly find the source of the odor because the beaker is now empty. This is what happened to the chemical.
What is evaporated? (volatile means that the chemical will evaporate (become a gas) at normal room temperatures. When working with these materials you should work with a fume hood or in a space that is well ventilated. They should never be left in an open unattended container as the scenario suggests. Nail polish is an example of a volatile chemical)
