What is the term for turning your bow through the wind?
Tack!
What do you call the meeting or lesson before sailing?
What is the first step in rigging your opti? Assume you already have all the gear and equipment you need.
Turn you boat into the wind! the sail cant go up unless your facing the wind. (Bonus 100 points what might happen if you try to put your sail up before having your bow to wind?)
Whats the name of the boat we build at Brooklyn Boat Works?
The Optimist or Opti! Designed in 1947!
What is the term for turning your stern through the wind? (Draw it out)
Jibe!
Name two items you and your boat need before sailing that are not part of the boat.
Most importantly you need a life jacket! A bailer (bucket to dump water out) is also very important; A tow line (rope in the bow of the boat); paddle in case of no wind; sun protection (sunscreen, dry shirt, hats)
When does your rudder and dagger board go on? (hint; its not the same time)
The rudder goes on once you've pulled your boat into the water and are deep enough for it to go on. The dagger board can't go all the way down until your deeper into the water!
Name at least two points of sail!Bonus for all three!
Reach, Run or Beat!
How can you prepare for a long day of sailing?
Sailing is outdoors and hopefully under the sun! Meaning its critical to get plenty of rest the night before and give your body the energy it needs! Get a good nights rest, drink plenty of water before, have a good breakfast and bring a snack!
You feel your boat start to Keel (lean to one side) how can might you prevent this or address it?
The boat leans to one side either because your sail is overpowered or your body weight is not balanced. You could either lean to the opposite side, countering the power of the wind on the sail. Or sail "loose" with your sail purposefully not full of wind.
Before leaving, you notice your sail has started to sag, what could be the cause of this issue? Should we fix it before leaving? (Bonus how could we fix it on the water)
Your halyard is low! raise it up by pulling down.
If you are at the downwind buoy (also known as leeward) and want to travel upwind (to the windward buoy) explain how you will get there, think about the angle to the wind, angle of your sail, balance, and course.
You will need to pull your sail in all the way and go onto a beat (also known as close haul). Be on the opposite side of your sail and ready for it to tip over (known as keel) towards the sail. You'll also have to tack often, making a zig zag because you cant sail directly into the wind!
You realize the weather has picked up since you've been getting ready to sail, you notice there are some dark clouds on the horizon; what should you do?
Always check the weather, before and during sailing! Light and even heavy rain is fine and can even be fun to sail in, but any chance of lightning is a big NO!
Someone is coming right towards you! Both of you realize too late in the last few seconds what phrase will you depend on to steer yourself to safety?
Tiller Towards Trouble! Pushing the tiller (or handle of the rudder) towards trouble will turn you away from trouble.
