Rule 42 propulsion what are you not allowed to do?

42.1 Basic Rule
A boat must use only wind and water for speed, except in specific cases (rules 42.3 or 45). The crew can adjust sails and hull, but they cannot use their bodies to propel the boat.

42.2 Prohibited Actions
These actions are not allowed:

  • (a) Pumping: Repeated pulling and releasing of sails, or using body movement to fan the sail.
  • (b) Rocking: Repeated rolling of the boat caused by body movement, adjusting sails, or steering.
  • (c) Ooching: Sudden forward body movements.
  • (d) Sculling: Repeated steering that pushes the boat forward or stops it from going backward.
  • (e) Unnecessary tacks or gybes that aren't due to wind changes or strategy.
